Who typically joins the Rochester Piano Club?
Most of our membership range from college and above in age and play classical or jazz acoustic piano. All skill levels are represented - from first-year students to professional pianists and piano teachers.
What activities are arranged? What do you Do?
Most often we gather every 6 - 8 weeks on Sunday afternoons at one of our member's homes to socialize and play for each other. Occasionally, we will meet for dinner and a concert at the Eastman Theater or one of the other beautiful Rochester venues.
What happens at a Rochester Piano Club Gathering?
Usually we meet at one of the member's homes. We talk and socialize for 25 - 30 minutes over light drinks and snacks and then play piano for each other. Everyone has an opportunity to play one or two pieces - about 3 to 8 minutes long total. You are not required to play, but the atmosphere is welcoming and open.
Some will play a highly polished piece as a "dress rehearsal" for an upcoming event. Others will try out new pieces, possibly starting and stopping a few times prior to reaching the end! This is most definitely NOT a competition or judged event - we play to have fun. We make mistakes, laugh, and start again.
Why do most people Join?
One of the most common reasons for joining is to get used to playing in front of people. Nothing eliminates "performance jitters" (or outright stage fright) like regularly playing in front of a welcoming audience!
Others join to provide themselves with goals or milestones to reach - setting a date to show off that piece that's been practiced for the last several months! The 6 - 8 week cadence is perfect for setting a plan for your piano development with informal/non-judged recitals to punctuate your progress
Finally, many come to simply share their love of piano with others like-minded. They may bring back pieces played in their childhood, hear new repertoire to take up, or learn from those more progressed. But most importantly, they join to find an opportunity to play!
I'm not sure I'm good enough. Should I join?
I thought we covered this! :-) If you love piano and you can make sounds with it, you are ready. Don't talk yourself out of a great experience with your piano playing!
